The Co-Teacher program is a two-year hand's on teaching program, where I am offered the incredible opportunity to co-teach with two experienced teachers at an elite independent school. Through this program, I am also involved in a co-teacher seminar discussing current issues in education today and learning best practices from knowledgeable, accomplished educators. I have been fortunate to co-teach in pre-kindergarten and second grade.
Co-Teacher Assistant Position
I was awarded the opportunity to lead the Co-Teacher program as the Co-Assistant. My role included welcoming and mentoring the new class of co-teachers, acting as a daily resource for my colleagues, serving as a resource for the administration, and planning professional development activities.
Pre-Kindergarten and Second grade
In my pre-k classroom, I received first hand experience teaching children in whole group, small group, and individual settings. The mornings begin with Morning Meeting, a time to "check in" with my students, transitioning from free discovery time to a more structured whole group lesson. During this time, I am able to keep all students actively engaged in the material we are focusing on. In the afternoon, the Pre-Kindergarten schedule offers time focused on small group. During this time, I have had experience differentiating material to meet each and every one of my students' needs. I am fortunate to share my classroom with an expert educator, providing me the opportunity to work with my students in a one-on-one setting, further learning the best way to completely meet my students' needs.
In my second grade classroom, I continued to have experience teaching children in many different settings, with a focus on differentiating the material for each child. As a second year co-teacher, I am responsible for teaching half of the curriculum to the students. Each day I have the opportunity to teach reading in a small group setting and math in both small or whole group settings. I also have direct experience teaching Writing Workshop and Sitton Word Study. Finally, I teach two social studies lesson per week relevant to our current topic of study.
